Banned from entering the USA after serving time for past mistakes, he's paid a price for the path he took, but not all of the price was a bad one. An easier life might have led him someplace else, but the reality of his life and his choices show up in the grit and honesty of his music. The hard times burning into his soul not only an impassioned will to create, but a focused determination to reach out through his music.
When asked about being a rock star, he'll say "I'm no rock star... and anyway that's all bullshit." His path has made him shy away from fame and refuse the yolk of commercial interest that comes all wrapped up with the trappings of celebrity. He laughs and says his ego can't handle fame, as he plays the part of just another guitar player, seeing himself an anonymous songwriter who writes for love and nothing more. But he knows there isn't anything more, and that's what pushes him on. Maybe he doesn't realise his own influence, or maybe he means what he says when he tells people "It's not about me anymore, it's about the music and the people who hear it."
